The scope of activity of the Institute includes research on the fundamentals of genetics, molecular genetics, physiology, biochemistry, bioecology, non-traditional methods of breeding involving global gene pool of cotton and other crops; study of their molecular-genetic, physiological and biochemical characteristics; development of synthetic donor for construction of varieties and optimization of their cultivation; identification of degree of genotypic and phenotypic correlations; role of individual genes and chromosomes in identifying the donors of agronomic traits and their use in creating new forms that combine the most important economically valuable characteristics; establishment of nature of effect and aftereffect of chemical and physical factors on heritable unit of cultivated and wild forms of cotton.
Within the project on the basis of the Genomic Research Centre there have been established Regional Training Centre for Molecular Markers, where young scientists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are trained to use modern technologies of molecular markers in Plant Genetic Resources research.

Uzbek Research Institute of Plant Growing is established under the guidance of academician N.I. Vavilov in 1924, and is considered as the largest research institution in Central Asia, which has the centralized gene pool of agricultural plants. Global collections of the institute include about 50 thousand samples of more than 100 agricultural crops. The given richest gene pool of plants is used to create high-quality varieties and will serve as the basis for food production for future generations.

The main objectives of the Institute include: creation of high-yielding high-quality varieties of fruit crops and grapevine, which are resistant to pests and diseases, frost-resistant, drought-enduring, having low water consumption, excelling the existing varieties on environmental sustainability, yield and quality; development of resource-saving and labor-saving ecologically safe technology of cultivation of fruit crops and grapevine in different soil-climatic zones of Uzbekistan; development of water-saving technologies on the basis of economical methods of irrigation; expansion of research on identifying the areas for non-shelter viticulture; improvement of adaptation and cultivation technology of fruit and nut crops and grapevine in mountain foothill areas; raising economic effectiveness of horticulture and viticulture through development of progressive forms of production organization under the conditions of market economy and various forms of ownership.
Within the project on the basis of the Institute there have been established National Training Center on Fruit Crops, where researchers and farmers of Uzbekistan can increase their knowledge and skills in varietal diversity of fruit crops and grapevine, technology of their cultivation, processing and storage of fruits and grapes.
